According to a 2006 study by Dr. Daniel Hall, a University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Physician (and ordained Episcopal priest), which analyzed actuarial death rates, weekly worship service attendance could add up to 3 years to a person's life. According to a study published online by JAMA Internal Medicine, women who attended religious services more than once per week had a 33 percent lower risk of death compared with women who never attended religious services. Further, the study results showed attending religious services more than once a week was linked to a 27 percent lower risk of death from cardiovascular disease and a 21 percent lower risk of death from cancer. "The results suggest that there is perhaps something about the communal religious experience that is very powerful," observes Tyler J. VanderWeele, Ph.D., of the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, author of the study.
